US Cohousing Survey Results Released!

by cohousingworks on September 29, 2011

A year long study on cohousing, conducted by the Cohousing Association of the United States, was recently publicized.  It covers 2/3 of the 3-part study, including a comprehensive survey of most communities in the US and a strengths/challenges comparison for the Association to use to better serve the communities.

So, what does cohousing in the United States look like?  Of the 80 responding communities…

  • 2/3 of the communities have between 25-35 units
  • Most commonly these units are built as duplexes – 6-units attached
  • 87% are legally organized as condominium associations
  • Most units are built to own
  • 14 communities had a number of rental units made available by owners
The study goes on to discuss the benefits of living in cohousing, the amount of social and economic support within neighborhoods, commonly cited challenges, and economic structuring.
It is available here.  If for any reason that link doesn’t work, feel free to email me at rebecca.disbrow@gmail.com and I’d be happy to email you a copy of it.
