You can grow community anywhere. Right in the neighborhood you live in right now.
By using some of the simple principles of community building, three families whose property backed onto each other’s, created an elegant garden in a tight urban space. What was once three very small back yards became a spacious, beautiful back yard oasis. Just the simple act of taking down backyard fences can increase the sense of connectedness and neighborliness among households.
The Washington Post ran a featured article on this endeavor. It’s quite something! This is a story you can recreate in your neighborhood!
What are the principles of creating community? Three of them that jump to mind immediately are:
- Collaboration
- Sharing
- Support
See where the folks involved in this backyard endeavor used these principles to make their “eden on earth.”
What other principles do you see operating among the people in this article? What other principles do you think underlie community building? Add your thoughts to this post! We want to hear from you!
