In celebration of the EcoVillage at Ithaca’s 20 year anniversary, we are hosting a 20 day series, each day highlighting one aspect of the community’s colorful history. Today is an introduction to the community. Check back for personal stories, founding documents, and inspiration for your own community! At the end of the 20 days, EVI is throwing us at Cohousing Collaborative a big party! (Just kidding, they’re throwing it for themselves!) Check out their 20 Year Anniversary Event on Saturday, September 17th. Click the link to open their event flyer.
1991 – 2011
Twenty years ago EcoVillage at Ithaca www.ecovillageithaca.org was just a vision. Today it includes a thriving village of two (soon to be three) cohousing neighborhoods and two Community Supported Agriculture farms.
Through careful green building design and community effort, residents have been able to cut their energy use by at least 40% compared to typical American households while living comfortable, middle-class lifestyles. TREE, the third neighborhood, plans to cut down energy use by 90%, by utilizing the Passiv Haus green building standard, adopted from Germany. Cutting-edge, non-profit educational programs and multiple community partnerships help to spread the lessons of this demonstration project through the EVI- Center for Sustainability Education. EVI is the popular subject of media shows, documentaries and books, and has won local, national and international awards.
We’re celebrating our 20th Anniversary with a big bash on Saturday, September 17 in Ithaca, New York. Join us for a fun, family-friendly public event which will showcase tours of the village, the farms, our new neighborhood solar 50 KW photovoltaic system, and much more. As we prepare for this gala event, we thought it would be fun to have a “count-down”: 20 years documented through a 20 day blog. Check back in every day to learn more about this fascinating ecovillage, and the people who have helped it to take root and grow. But first, click the image below and come on a “Virtual Tour” of the Village, put together by Jim Bosjolie, one of our residents.
I hope you enjoyed your visit…come back again soon!
